The aim of the project is to develop a tourist guide 'Survival Kit' for each area which can then be shared.

All our children at Yardley Gobion CE Primary School will be involved in creating our own 'Survival Kit for our area.

The project is fully funded by the British Council with money from the EU for Lifelong Learning.

The first meeting was in Germany and Mrs Gleeson and Mrs Southgate met with teachers from the other schools to exchange posters the children had made and also to observe lessons and plan the next stages of the project.  We are setting up a display related to the project with the posters we received and children have started to exchange letters already.  Our next task is to put together 50 useful phrases that a visitor would need if they came to England and specifically this area.

The children welcomed their visitors from the partner countries and we watched them in lessons.

They were writing their news from their holiday the week before.

The children then shared their news with each other in ‘Circle Time’.

As you can see the children bring their work to school in large bags which stay in the classroom.  Parents have to buy all the exercise, text books and pencils etc.

Classes have a mixture of chalk boards and white boards but no interactive boards  as yet although teachers who have been to England and have seen them here are hoping they will have them soon!  There is a small computer suite with 5 computers.

Children start school at 8 in the morning and finish at 1pm and go home for lunch.  They have a break at about 9.30 with a snack which is like our packed lunch with a roll and a drink.  They have a short play and then back to lessons again.  At 11 they have another break for another ‘lunch ‘ style break but no playtime.

There is an after school club and children can stay there to have lunch, do their homework and play.

The three schools of Thulen, Alme and Madfeld are linked with one headteacher as they are all small schools.  Each school does not have every class and some children are bussed from school to school to where their appropriate class is.

Children start school at 6 year’s old and leave for secondary school at 11.  They all attend kindergarten before this and can read and write before they start Primary School.

We will be hosting the next meeting from March 15th and 16th 2010.
